Edo Govt increases minimum wage to 40,000, reduces working days to 3

In a bid to assuage the hardship that the fuel subsidy removal will cause on the people, the Edo State government has increased the minimum wage paid to workers in the state from N30,000 to N40,000.

The governor, Godwin Obaseki, in a statement on Tuesday, also reduced the number of work days of civil and public servants from five to three days a week, saying workers will now work from home two days every week.

Obaseki noted that his government shared the pains of the people, and assured them that his administration would stand with them to reduce the pains and sufferings currently being faced due to the current realities.

“As a proactive government, we have since taken the step to increase the minimum wage paid to workers in Edo state from the approved N30,000 to N40,000, the highest in the country today.

“We want to assure you that we will continue to pay this amount, while we hope to increase it even further if more allocation accrues to our state from the federal government in view of the expected savings occasioned by the removal of the fuel subsidy. Obaseki said.

He also added that the state government would collaborate with energy distribution companies to lower the rising cost of energy on the people and to improve power supply to homes and businesses.

“While government intensifies these efforts to alleviate the burden of the fuel price increase on the people during this very challenging period, we want to call on everyone to remain calm and go about their daily businesses lawfully”. The governor assured.

  1. As relieving as this appears, the N10,000 increment, that is if they start paying immediately, won’t really cushion anything if compare with the level at which goods and services are increased. That aside, the teachers would also work 3 times a week when with their 5 days, they have not be maximally productive.
