Ogun NANNM Rolls Out Measures To Prevent Cholera Spread 

The National association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, Ogun State chapter, has rolled out measures to prevent spread of Cholera outbreak in the state.
The cholera disease which broke out in Lagos recently with about 29 deaths and over 500 cases.
In Ogun, the Commissioner for Health, Tomi Coker, confirmed the cholera outbreak on Monday with 25 suspected cases and one death.
The NANNM in Ogun State
under the chairmanship of Nurse Adejoke Bello, has therefore rolled out measures to prevent the spread.
The body noted that Cholera outbreak “is already in our neighboring state, lagos.  And can spread to other states. Therefore,  there is need for preventive measures against it.”
Some of symptoms highlighted by the body are:
The symptoms of cholera include
– Watery diarrhea (“rice-water stools”)
– Vomiting
– Leg cramps
– Restlessness and irritability
– Rapid heart rate
– Loss of elasticity in the skin
– Dry mucous membranes
– Low blood pressure
In severe cases, cholera can lead to:
– Severe dehydration
– Shock
– Coma
– Death
Most people infected with cholera do not develop symptoms.
Symptoms usually appear within 2-3 days of infection, but can appear within a few hours or up to 5 days.
PREVENTION
Prevention of cholera involves a combination of individual and community efforts to improve hygiene, sanitation, and access to safe water. Some key measures include:
1. Drink safe water:
Use water that has been boiled, treated, or comes from a safe source.
2. Wash hands frequently:
Use soap and clean water, especially before eating and preparing food.
3. Use proper hygiene:
Keep food and cooking areas clean, and avoid close contact with people with cholera symptoms.
4. Use latrines or toilets:
 Properly dispose of human waste, and maintain clean latrines and toilets.
5. Cook food thoroughly:
Avoid raw or undercooked foods, especially seafood.
6. Avoid contaminated food and water:
Avoid street food, raw fruits and vegetables, and untreated water sources.
7. Use water purification tablets or filters:
 If safe water is not available.
8. Practice good hygiene during menstruation:
Use sanitary napkins and change them regularly.
9. Avoid close contact with people with cholera:
 Keep a safe distance to prevent transmission.
Remember, prevention is key! By following these measures, you can significantly reduce your risk of getting cholera.
