Amidst economic hardship occasioned by the removal of petroleum subsidy and the increase in the pump price of petrol as well as the rising cost of commodities in the market, Nigerians woke up Friday to yet another increase in the price of cooking gas, also known as Liquefied Petroleum Gas, LPG

The Roving Pen gathered that the retail price of the commodity which hitherto sold for N650 per kilogram as at last week, has now risen to N800 per kilogram.

Jide Oyewunmi, a gas retail outlet operator in the Onikolobo area of Abeokuta the Ogun state capital confirmed the price increase to our correspondent.

Though, he could not specifically explained what led to the price increase, he however attributed it to market forces, describing it as a reflection of the price he got from the wholesaler’s depot.

Stakeholders in the entire value chain of the oil and gas sector have also confirmed the increment, citing rising international prices, high tax rates and prices of vessels, forex scarcity, and naira devaluation.

A house wife in Ijede Ikorodu, Lagos, Mrs. Idowu also explained that she bought 12.5kg of the cooking gas for N8,500 last week Saturday, adding that the same quantity is currently being sold for N10,000 in the metropolis.

The Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM) had on Thursday told consumers to brace up for tougher times as it projected a price hike of the commodity starting next week.

Olatunbosun Oladapo, President of the Association, said, the price increase started Thursday evening.

“As I am talking to you, I can confirm that the price of cooking gas has gone up,”
